Officials in Thailand have a reputation for showing zero tolerance to drug smuggling in their country.

Nolubabalo "Babsie" Nobanda discovered this the hard way when she was arrested in 2011 at the Bangkok airport.

Babsie was caught in possession of 650g of cocaine, which was mixed with baking powder, hidden in her dreadlocks.

The Daily Dispatch reported that the 31-year-old developed her skills while serving her sentence and obtained a degree in communications.

Babsie was able to complete her studies through distance learning and is set to return home in September.

Briefly.co.za understands that Thai resident, Henk Vanstaen, had been assisting Babsie since she was arrested.

Vanstaen said, “I know she learnt a lot during her stay here. Not only she will come out with a degree in communication, but what is more important, with the realisation that she took her destiny in her own hands and became a better person.”

During her term, Babsie taught prison officials how to speak English.

She also struck up a close friendship with fellow inmate, Thando Pendu, while the 33-year-old served her 10-year sentence for the same offence.

Pendu returned back home to her home in Free State in June.
