When South Africans think of taxi drivers, many negative connotations spring to mind.
Many may instinctively visualise images of violence, unscrupulous behaviour and reckless driving.
However, one man took the surprising step when he hailed a group of taxi drivers as heroes after they helped his mother.
Zaid (@Z_Vawda) took to Twitter to reveal how his mother’s handbag was stolen and how the drivers saved the day.
He included the caption: “When my mother’s handbag was stolen by a smash and grab the only people who helped were taxi drivers. They tracked the man down took him to prison and returned the bag untouched with everything inside. Everyone else on the road just watched.”
He shared the tweet on Tuesday and it went viral as many reacted positively to the news.
Briefly.co.za noted that many other commuters share admiration for the drivers based on them witnessing their acts of kindness.
Mumtaz Moosa Saley (@mumtaz_saley) commented, “Honestly I agree, I met up in an accident and the ones who stopped were taxi drivers. When I asked them why they stopped the one person told me “I see you every day, we travel the same road three four times a day. We are family, how can I not help you.” For me that was soul deep.”
uMaNdaba uMhlungu (@Mpiloe_Cabeka) added, “Taxi drivers are some of the best people true story they'll save you from any and everything if they were in charge of putting criminals away we'd literally have no crime just the occasional taxi war.”
Too Legit To Quit (@Huroennisa) said, “This isn’t difficult for me to believe. Taxi drivers get a bad rep just because they drive crazy. Every time I’ve been in a taxi I’ve never felt safer.”
