- A Welsh police department shared a mugshot of a wanted criminal as they appealed to the public for assistance
- They received an overwhelming reaction, but it did not help with the case as people continuously mocked the man for his receding hairline
- After a whopping 84 000 comments, police pulled the plug on the post and warned the public to avoid abusive behaviour
Police departments are becoming tech-savvy in their crime-fighting techniques.
A relatively new trend is the use of social media to maximise the potential for assistance from the public.
However, a Welsh police department got more than they bargained for when they released the mugshot of one wanted criminal.
Officials at the Gwent Police Department shared a photo of 21-year-old Jermaine Taylor in a Facebook post last week.
A staggering 84 000 comments were received and it’s hard to imagine that none of them were helpful.
The Mirror UK reported that to be the case however, as the vast majority of Facebook users were in stitches as a result of the man’s receding hairline.
The New Zealand Herald reported that police officials felt things went too far and pulled the plug on the Facebook post.
While they conceded that many of the comments were witty and entertaining, they also warned the public about crossing the line.
Gwent Police said, “Please remember that harassing, threatening and abusing people on social media can be against the law.”
Briefly.co.za was able to gather some of the most eye-catching comments prior to the removal of the post.
Lea Hook said: "He was last seen in town; Police are combing the area."
Mario Saeed commented: "21-year-old?? That was one windy paper run."
Another New Zealander said, "He walked out of the complex at precisely 7.30pm, and his hairline at 7.45pm."
