Drakenstein is a DA-led municipality, Briefly.co.za has gathered, and is a stronghold in terms of party support. It is a large municipality and includes the town of Wellington as well as surrounding farms.

According to The South African, Drakenstein's finances are exceptionally well-managed, despite the fact that the municipality is not particularly wealthy relative to its size. For example, Drakenstein is known for consistently paying creditors timeously and for investing in infrastructure.

The municipality reportedly also performed well in terms of criteria such as yearly growth in debtors and overspending of operating budgets.

"This is a remarkable achievement and we're honoured to officially be recognised," Drakenstein Municipality Mayor Conrad Poole told IOL. This is the second time in a row that the municipality has received top honours from Treasury.

Poole attributes the municipality's success to extensive financial planning and a firm stance against corruption.

Drakenstein's location in the wine country also helps, as unemployment levels in the region are significantly lower than the national average.
