The old apartheid flag is officially banned thanks to today's landmark ruling. South Africans took to social media to share what was a mostly joyous occasion for democracy.

The Equality Court has officially made it illegal to display the old apartheid flag and the majority could not be more pleased.

Briefly.co.za reported that the ruling had been passed down by Judge Phineas Mojapelo, who found the flag to be a symbol of hate speech.

Citizens took to social media to express their views on the situation, with some feeling that the flag should have been outlawed with the birth of democracy in 1994.

Naturally, some raised the view that the flag should be left alone, citing freedom of speech as the reason why, but the majority definitely viewed the ruling as progress.
