- The motion of no confidence in Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has been withdrawn
- Mashaba initially slammed the ANC after learning of the withdrawal
- A defiant Mashaba dedicated a toast to the ANC via social media and resembled a popular cartoon character
City of Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has been under fire of late following attempts by the African National Congress (ANC) to have him ousted.
Mashaba recently fended off a third motion of no confidence since his tenure.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) sensed the danger in the latest attempt and responded by launching the #HandsOffMashaba campaign.
Briefly.co.za earlier reported that ANC Councillor Jolidee Matingo walked up to the Mayor of Johannesburg and handed him an EFF uniform.
Briefly.co.za gathered the most recent motion was initiated due to a change in Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) sentiment and the ANC sniffing blood.
The South African reported that the ANC initially claimed to have the support of 145 councillors for their motion to be passed.
It is believed that a lack of cohesion with the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) is what stifled the ANC’s attempt.
A bullish Mashaba laid into the ANC following the withdrawal.
He said, “I don’t see the reason why they didn’t go ahead with the motion. They must have failed to get the numbers, perhaps CR17 couldn’t buy them the necessary voters. Maybe they failed to come up with the money.”
Mashaba followed this up with an ice-cool response via social media as he took to Twitter to toast the ruling party.
To many, Mashaba resembled the character, Kermit the frog, from the show called 'The Muppets'.
Mashaba’s hilarious post has already been liked nearly 5 000 times since being shared on Thursday.
