- Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has announced his squad for the rugby World Cup in Japan
- The South African public have reacted strongly following the inclusion of Eben Etzebeth and the omission of Aphiwe Dyantyi
- Etzebeth has been accused of allegedly assaulting a man over the weekend
Rugby World Cup 2019 is set to kick off and the Springbok squad has been announced.
Briefly.co.za reported on the 31 players selected by coach Rassie Erasmus on Monday.
It is customary for the announcement to raise some eyebrows, with the topic of quota players being a hot topic for debate.
However, on this occasion, the South African public reacted strongly to the inclusion of former captain Eben Etzebeth and the omission of Aphiwe Dyantyi.
Briefly.co.za earlier reported on Etzebeth’s alleged assault of a man over the weekend in Langebaan, Western Cape.
Many South Africans were stunned to learn that Dyantyi had been excluded following a failed urine test as he tested positive for performance-enhancing substances.
Dyantyi had been absent from the team due to injury, but supporters were hoping to see the flying winger soon.
Based on the social media reaction, this could be one of the most controversial squad announcements.
Ismael Soeker (@soekerdotcom) commented, “So Etzebeth is not going to jail or appearing during this time? No media report about the incident?”
Residential_1 (@Residential_1) said, “It's good that this is happening, let's not forget how often EbenEtzebeth gets into fist fights, yet it's never highlighted like this.”
Wakayiyatc (@wakayiyatc) asked, “Why do I have a feeling someone is just trying to sabotage the springboks before the world cup?”
The Patriot (@Mackvocate) asked, “Where is Dyantyi?”
Kgalaka (@Sea_T_F) said, “C'mon we deserve some explanation about Aphiwe. Surely if a player who denies such outcome when we also know our record as far as our medical team is concerned regarding tests, surely we've got to be given something. F** man.”
Landless Sekamo oa ha Mohajane (@LordSkem) added, “I feel Aphiwe Dyantyi was sabotaged.”
@Zakes (@KEKANAEZEKIEL) commented, “I have seen this movie before and keeps going on and on, just with different characters. #AphiweDyantyi is a victim of medical staff who do not care about the diet of players of colour. Am I off the mark here Pa.”
Mr Brown (@asandabrown) added, “Another Chilliboy story, another talented black springbok falls victim to this heinous crime before #RWC2019.”
Briefly.co.za gathered that Dyantyi now awaits the results of his B sample before the matter will be finalised.
