North West health department head Thabo Lekalakala has been arrested for fraud, along with finance MEC Wendy Nelson. This comes in light of his irregular appointment of a top official in the department.
Thabo Lekalakala has been arrested for fraud, appearing on Monday in the Mmabatho Regional Court, according to the Hawks.
News24 reports that the health boss had been nabbed after an investigation into his appointment, which found that he had been appointed despite providing false information about his qualifications.
Finance MEC Wendy Nelson was also arrested over Lekalakala's appointment, with the Hawks refusing to garner any more information at the time.
City Press reports that Supra Mahumapelo, premier of the province at the time, had appointed a committee to appoint the health department's new leader.
Despite being dishonest over his skill set, Lekalakala had managed to secure a recommendation for the post.
The newly-appointed boss had gone on to enter into the highly controversial R180 million Mediosa deal, which was linked to the Gupta family, Briefly.co.za gathered.
Tebogo Lekgethwane, spokesperson for the Department of Health in the province, revealed that Lekalakala was undergoing a disciplinary hearing:
"He challenged his suspension in December and was reinstated effective January 2019."
