- Embattled politician Zandile Gumede's resignation withdrawal has been confirmed by the ruling party
- Nevertheless, the ANC is adamant that eThekwini will have a new mayor by next week
- Reports indicate that the former Durban boss found out about her redeployment via a text message
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has responded to Zandile Gumede withdrawing her resignation by promising the eThekwini Municipality will have a new mayor next week.
Briefly.co.za reported that Gumede had withdrawn her expected resignation yesterday, gearing up for a showdown with party leadership.
Zikalala assures that the ruling party is engaged with the politician in order to resolve the issue, reports eNCA:
“By Wednesday we'd have sorted this issue and have the new mayor and exco to take the council forward. The ANC mandate will have to be implemented."
News24 reports that a source in Gumede's 'inner circle' had revealed that the axed mayor had found out about her redeployment in a text message.
This apparently prompted her decision to withdraw her resignation, with plans to appeal the motion with the national executive committee.
Gumede had previously been arrested for her involvement in alleged tender fraud and corruption, resulting in her taking indefinite leave from her duties as the head of the municipality.
