The Liverpool center-back guided his team to win the Champions League for the sixth time in their history.

And the Netherlands international played an integral part in the Reds fairy tale story to the final where they defeated Tottenham in the final by 2-0.

Since the inception of the Uefa Men's Player of the Year award in 2011, Ronaldo has won it three times (2014, 2016, 2017), while Messi has won it twice (2011 and 2015).

In the women's category, Lyon's Lucy Bronze beat her teammates Ada Hegerberg, and Amandine Henry to win the accolade.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool centre-back, has clinched the prestigious best defender prize at the 2018/19 edition of UEFA awards held on Thursday, August 29, in Monaco, France.

The Dutchman cruised to a comfortable victory having beaten other football stars in the three-man list which contains Liverpool wonderkid Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ajax ex-man Matthijs de Ligt.
