- South African boxing and karate champion, Leighandre Jegels, has been shot dead by her boyfriend, a local police officer
- Sources have reported that Jegels had recently taken out a protection order against her boyfriend
- Jegels mother was also shot and wounded during the incident
Leighandre “Baby Lee” Jegels, world karate champion and South African boxing star, was shot and killed by her boyfriend, a 37-year-old Tactical Response Team officer.
According to TimesLIVE, Jegels had recently taken out a protection order against the man.
Jegels’ mother was also wounded by gunshots in the incident and was taken to an East London hospital.
The culprit was arrested shortly after, following a car accident involving his rental car, in which 1 person was killed and 4 others injured.
Jegels was named South Africa’s karate champion in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012.
Although she hadn’t competed since 2017, Jegels was on her way to Zolani Tete’s All Winners Boxing Club to train for an upcoming fight against Siphosethu Nxazonke when her car was flagged down by her boyfriend.
The SA star boxer was meant to make her comeback with a tour to Saudi Arabia in July, however, Saudi Arabia officials cancelled the event, saying that women should not be involved in “aggressive sport”, Sport24 reported.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirmed that they are investigating the shooting, Briefly.co.za gleaned.
Spokesperson for IPID, Sontaga Seisa, confirmed the incident.
“It is alleged that an off-duty policeman based at TRT East London fired several shots at his girlfriend who died instantly on the scene. The same policeman fired shots to his girlfriend’s mother and injured her. She is currently receiving medical attention in the area,” Seisa explained.
