Thebe Magugu has put South African fashion on the map. If you have never heard that name before then best you remember it from now, because Thebe is on fire.
The 26-year-old fashion designer was born and bred in Kimberly. Thebe has taken the Mzansi fashion industry by storm; he’s going to be the next Louis Vuitton.
Briefly.co.za learnt that Thebe’s designs won one of the most prestigious fashion awards in the world of fashion; the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers.
Thebe's collection was scrutinised by a panel of more than 63 of the top fashion design judges in the world. On the judging panel sat the biggest names in fashion; Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, Louis Vuitton creative director Nicolas Ghesquière, US designer from the eponymous label Marc Jacobs, and the executive vice-president of Louis Vuitton, Delphine Arnault.
Taking the prize over more than 1 700 other designers from all over the globe, Thebe has done Mzansi proud.
Not only did he scoop the title, Thebe also revived an extremely generous cash prize of €300,000 (R4 891 350) and a one-year mentorship programme provided by the LVMH team. Thebe plans to use his prize money to help young designers and curb unemployment.
This award has sky-rocketed Thebe’s career and opened a lot of doors for him in the fashion world.
