At the ripe age of nine Mpumi became an orphan when she lost her mother to HIV/Aids. Mpumi was lucky enough to be one of the 72 girls who made up the 2007 inauguration class of Oprah Winfrey's Leadership Academy for Girls; this opened many doors for her and allowed her to become the woman she is today.

MC Hammer was at the event and was moved by the work that Mpumi has done. A picture of the two was taken on the night and MC Hammer took to social media to share the snap along with some words of congratulations for Mpumi.
