South Africans were left with mixed reactions when the Minister of Finance was posted flying economy class. Tito Mboweni was pictured sitting rather awkwardly in the economy seats ahead of a recent flight.
The official National Treasury page shared the picture on social media with the caption:
"Minister of Finance @tito_mboweni leading by example. Flying economy class to Cape Town. #WalktheTalk"
Mzansi social media users were divided by the gesture; while some were impressed with the Minister, others thought that it was unnecessary to post the picture.

"If he were leading by example, he wouldn't have had to pose for the shot. Someone would have had to have invaded his privacy and take the pic without him knowing. Doing good by stealth is what I believe to be genuine, not advertised "good". "Look at me, I'm in economy class!". No."
To which Dan_palm responded:
"Can’t South Africans just be positive for once. We finally have politicians we can proudly promote and the first reaction is a negative one. Understandable given the State Capture and negative mindset over the past 10 years but to move forward let’s celebrate the positives."
"We are not desperate to be positive. We don't celebrate mediocrity either..."
"He should be taking the bus! Country's in dire financial straits."
"But why do we post such things when this should be the norm - he isn’t great for doing this, he’s just a person doing his job."
While Gengezi76 said:
"Some of us want to see it. I have a problem with this mentality that says we should not applaud when people are doing their jobs. We are so used to people not doing their jobs and therefore always criticising. Well done minister."
