Most young children count down the days until their next birthday in the hope of getting their favourite toy.

Christian Paine looked forward to his 8th birthday, but for completely different reasons.

The Grade 2 learner at Crawford Prep in Fourways made an enormous sacrifice as he asked friends and family not to buy him a birthday gift.

Instead, he called on them to purchase books and games instead.
