Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has bagged the FIFA Men's Player of the Year award for a record sixth time.
News24 reports that the Barcelona sticker had beaten rival Cristiano Ronaldo to the prize, with Ronaldo shying away from attending the events ceremony in Milan.
Ronaldo had been shortlisted, in line to possibly win the award, but had chosen to stay away from the glitzy La Scala Opera House celebration on Monday.

Both Messi and Virgil van Dijk are now in line for the coveted Ballon d'Or, the winner of which will be announced in early December, Reports TimesLIVE.
Briefly.co.za reported that a supercomputer had predicted this victory for Messi, who was declared the superior player in comparison to Ronaldo using formulas put forward by scientists.
Nevertheless, fans were ecstatic that Messi had been honoured with the award, flocking to social media to congratulate him and throw the slightest bit of shade at his rival:
