Winnie Madikizela Mandela will always be remembered as one of the most iconic struggle veterans in South Africa.

EFF leader Julius Malema is well known for his close relationship with Winnie, taking to social media to applaud her for her perseverance:

"You never allow the enemies of progress to change your beautiful smile and kind heart."

President Cyril Ramaphosa also marked the occasion, remembering her fondly in his tribute:

"She would have turned 83 today. She was fierce & unwavering in her fight against injustice, dedicated to the total emancipation of her people. Today we remember Winnie Madikizela Mandela. Freedom fighter. Revolutionary. Mother of the nation. She lives in all of us."

Minister Dlamini Zuma commended her, saying that her contribution to the liberation movement remains unforgettable.

Minister Nathi Mthethwa said that while she has been gone for some time, her spirit lives on in the heart of Mzansi.
