Almost every society believes that a woman should strive to make money and have a nice career but, more often than not, she is expected to settle down with the love of her life, have a grand wedding and produce children as per nature's design as well.

However, a few women choose to deviate from the norm and live life on their own terms. One of such people is one of the richest black women on the planet, Oprah Winfrey, who is worth $2,7 billion.

In a recent interview, Winfrey, who has been with her partner Stedman Graham for over 30 years, revealed why she chose not to get married or have kids. Speaking to People magazine, Winfrey stated that she has spent a lot of time speaking to others who deal with serious issues and felt that having children would just be too much.

Although Winfrey once nursed the idea of having children, especially after she got engaged to Graham in 1992, she realised it would require a lot of time and energy and she was unable to compartmentalise parts of her life like other women.

The media mogul said:

"I realised, ‘Whoa, I’m talking to a lot of messed-up people, and they are messed up because they had mothers and fathers who were not aware of how serious that job is.'
"I don’t have the ability to compartmentalise the way I see other women do. It is why, throughout my years, I have had the highest regard for women who choose to be at home [with] their kids, because I don’t know how you do that all day long. Nobody gives women the credit they deserve.”
