Patrick Day died in Chicago on Wednesday after sustaining injuries to his brain during a face-off at the Wintrust Arena over the weekend.
Lou DiBella, Day's promoter, released a statement on the situation, saying that the boxer had succumbed to his injuries:
“He was surrounded by his family, close friends and members of his boxing team, including his mentor, friend and trainer, Joe Higgins.”
Day was rushed off to hospital on a stretcher after Conwell left him motionless in the arena, but doctors could do nothing to reverse the injuries.
The 27-year-old had gone into a coma after his defeat and underwent emergency brain surgery at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, reports SABC.
Efforts to save him were unfruitful and, four days after the fight, Day passed on. DiBella says that the love shown for him has been overwhelming:
“On behalf of Patrick’s family, team and those closest to him, we are grateful for the prayers, expressions of support and outpouring of love for Pat that have been so obvious since his injury.”
Tributes were shared online by fans reaching out to give those close to Day their condolences:
