Young spelling bee champ Hlulani Baloyi has scooped top honours at the Africa Spelling Bee competition held in Uganda over the weekend. She will represent Africa in the 2020 World Spelling Bee in the USA.
The 14-year-old hailing from Limpopo has made both her family and Mzansi proud with her latest win. Her mother Tinyiko Baloyi said her daughter is very excited to visit the States next year.
Tinyiko said it's been a difficult journey getting the young champion to Uganda as they had to raise funds for a family member to accompany her on the trip. Her story was shared online and people donated up to R10 000.
The Grade 8 pupil prepared for the competition by going through the dictionary and learning new words.
Briefly.co.za previously reported that the brilliant girl from Malamulele in Limpopo emerged tops at the Mzansi Spelling Bee Competition, earning her the ticket to represent the country last year. The contest was held later in November in Nairobi, Kenya. She did not win this particular competition, but used what she learnt to improve and win this recent one.
