- Herman Mashaba has left big shoes to fill for the person who replaces him as the mayor of Johannesburg
- UDM head Bantu Holomisa has endorsed a surprising candidate as a possible replacement for the beloved leader
- Holomisa says that, if nothing else, Athol Trollip at least has the experience required
UDM leader Bantu Holomisa has given Athol Trollip his endorsement to take over the reins from Herman Mashaba.
In a social media post, the politician shared that he felt Helen Zille should recommend him for the job:
"Herman Mashaba resigns. Madam Zille should recommend Trollip to replace Mashaba. At least he has some experience."
Briefly.co.za reported that Athol Trollip has fiercely campaigned for the position of DA federal council chairperson, claiming that Helen Zille's time in politics had come and gone.
The former Nelson Mandela Bay mayor had been removed by a motion of no confidence, but Holomisa seems to think he is still the man for the job.
Mashaba, to the disappointment of many, had announced his resignation in response to Zille being elected to the position.
During a media briefing on Monday, the outgoing mayor had explained why he was divorcing the DA:
“The election of Helen Zille as federal council chairperson represents a victory for people in the DA who stand opposed to my beliefs and value system. I cannot reconcile myself with a group of people who believe that race is irrelevant in the discussion of inequality and poverty in SA in 2019.”
