Mmusi Maimane caused quite the upset in the political world when he announced his resignation as leader of the Democratic Alliance.

Although there were rumours of his pending exit, the official announcement still took many by surprise.

In a media briefing on Wednesday, 23 October, Maimane confirmed his resignation with fellow member, Athol Trollip, joining him in leaving the party.

South Africans had to react and Briefly.co.za reported that social media was a hive of activity following the news as people shared countless comical and controversial reactions.
