The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has announced the killing of Abu al-Hassan al-Muhajir, new leader just appointed to head the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) after the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

Trump announced that al-Muhtajir was 'terminated' in a tweet confirming the development just days after he announced the killing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the former leader of the terrorist organisation.

Trump tweeted: "Just confirmed that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi's number one replacement has been terminated by American troops. Most likely would have taken the top spot - Now he is also dead!"

Though Trump did not give details about the identity of this new leader of ISIL who was killed, earlier reports that named al-Muhtajir as the leader.

Aljazeera reports that the US government also confirmed the killing of a spokesperson "and a high-ranking figure within the group".

The report said fingers are pointing in the direction of Abu Othman al-Tunsi, a Tunisian national who heads ISIL's Shura council, as the next new leader of the group. reported that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had been killed during an earlier American raid that had been kept a secret from Democrat politicians.
