'Friday' actor John Witherspoon passes away at 77, fans pay tribute

- Actor John Witherspoon, best known for his iconic role as Willie Jones in the Ice Cube-produced Friday movie series, passed away yesterday

- He was 77 years old and died at his home in Sherman Oaks

- His family made the sad announcement on Twitter

Witherspoon began his stand-up comedy career in the 1970's.

His comedic talents opened the door to an on-screen career.

His biggest TV role came when he played the father to Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans on the The Wayans Bros.

He also famously starred in the hit 1995 movie Friday and its sequels, Next Friday and Friday After Next.

Another memorable role he had was as Pops in the cult satire animation series Boondocks.

Witherspoon's son, JD Witherspoon, took to Twitter to share a touching message in honour of his father's memory, along with some family snaps..

He wrote, "So... my Dad died today & honestly I’m not sure how to feel. I’m sad, but I’m also happy for all the great times we had together. We’d roast each other like homies more than father & son, and I really liked that. He was my best friend & my idol," JD wrote. "Love you Dad... I’ll miss you."

Witherspoon's co-star in Friday and Boondocks, Academy Award winner Regina King ,tweeted her condolences.

Fans have taken to social media to pay their respects and 'Rest in Peace' is currently trending on Twitter.
