Benni McCarthy has been fired as the coach of Cape Town City after a difficult two-season run. The announcement was made in the early hours of morning on Sunday. Mzansi soccer fans have had mixed reactions about the sacking and took to social media to voice their thoughts.
Briefly.co.za reported that the club had announced its decision to terminate McCarthy's contract after the team only managed to win two out of 18 games. In a statement released late on Sunday night, the club thanked the sportsman for his service. Despite parting ways, the club says McCarthy will go down in the team's history and wished him well.
Social media users were less courteous in the response to the news. Twitter user Andile_mlacash said:
"Don't bring Benni McCarthy to my club @orlandopirates."
While IamDonicap said:
"I think Stuart Baxter will be replacing Benni at Cape Town City."
"Benni was fired nge WhatsApp message at midnight, Amakhosi will make sure Rhulani will resign in secrecy after being chased out of the stadium by Amabhaka."
"Benni just like Pitso is suited for small clubs where they will nurse their egos. Pirates & Chiefs need selfless coaches who put the brand 1st."
"Pirates needs Benni."
Others were little more positive and hoped for the best for Benni and his future in coaching. Twitter user sirLCR said:
"I hope Benni will get to coach another PSL team that'll also have patience and faith in him, even if it's a 'smaller' team."
"Good luck Benni."
