He was raised by his mother after his father was murdered in a drug deal gone bad back in 1974.
Combs went to an all boys' Catholic school in the Bronx neighbourhood of New York.
He majored in business administration at Howard University, where he produced weekly dance parties and ran an airport shuttle service to make extra money while attending classes.
Combs dropped out of university to pursue an internship with the Uptown Records record label. He rose quickly up the ranks to the level of vice president.
In the early 1990s, Combs left Uptown Records to start his own record and management label, Bad Boy Entertainment.
There he worked with a range of artists from Mariah Carey, Method Man, Babyface, TLC and Faith Evans to New Edition, SWV, Aretha Franklin and Biggie Smalls.
