ANCYL rally ends in tragedy: 25-year-old fatally shot during fight

- An ANC Youth League rally at the Temba Stadium in Hammanskraal ended in tragedy on Saturday

- An argument between delegates escalated into a shooting with one man fatally wounded and another injured

- The deceased had reportedly attempted to defuse the situation when he met his fate

A 25-year-old ANCYL member has died after a shooting at a Hammanskraal rally, with another member injured.

News24 reports that the SAPS spokesperson has confirmed the incident. Brigadier Mathapelo Peters commented that:

"Preliminary reports reveal that an argument broke out amongst some delegates during a political rally at the stadium, and this led to scenes of violence where the delegates allegedly started attacking each other."

The man who lost his life had allegedly been trying to end the fight when an unknown suspect opened fire:

"It is reported that the deceased was trying to defuse the fight when an unknown man emerged from the crowd and fired shots at the deceased, fatally wounding the 25-year old victim."

The victim who survived the ordeal was reportedly the organizer of the event and is currently in hospital.

As for the suspect, Peters noted that they drove off in a grey BMW with unknown registration, Briefly.co.za.

ANCYL regional chair Lesego Makhubela revealed that the incident had taken place outside of the venue. The suspect is allegedly known to those who witnessed the incident, but not an ANCYL member.

The police are urging anyone with information to come forward and assist in the investigation:

"Police are still on the scene to gather more information, and are appealing to anyone with information of the suspect and his whereabouts to contact police in Temba or call the Crime Stop number 08600 10111."
