KwaZulu-Natal residents' worst fears were realised on Tuesday as a tornado wreaked havoc through the midlands.
The extreme storm is reported to have ripped through parts of New Hanover, on the outskirts of Pietermaritzburg.
Disaster management teams have been sent to provide assistance as injuries have been sustained and several properties have been ravaged.
IOL reported that Cogta MEC Sipho Hlomuka touched on the impact the tornado has already had.
Hlomuka said, "A number of homes have collapsed, countless trees have been uprooted and the electricity supply in the area has been interrupted."
Briefly.co.za understands that there is a distinct possibility of deaths and missing persons being reported at a later stage as the full impact is still being assessed.
Videos have already been circulating via Twitter and have created a frenzy.
In the video, a man can be heard saying that the tornado is progressing towards a power station.
Cogta has warned residents to remain cautious and vigilant as dangerous thunderstorms continue to plague the area.
