A video of prisoners singing church hymns has gone viral on social media. In the footage, the orange jumpsuit-clad men can be seen enjoying a gospel jam session. Social media users had divided reactions, many felt that prisons should never be depicted as a fun place to be.
Twitter user Yoliswamakhasi shared the video on the social media platform and it has gone viral. Many had mixed reactions about the footage. While others were touched by the display, others felt like prisoners should not be applauded for anything. A few others were even disturbed by the fact that recording equipment was available for the prisoners. Twitter user BanziMalindi said:
"I know that some people behind bars have done terrible things and I hope to not minimize anyone’s pain. These people are human still and they still have God if they choose to praise"
"According to me, I think prison should be like Hell where no one wants to go...so this way, it seems like prison is a fun place so no wonder other people are not scared of it and continue to do wrong things. When they have their fun, it should not be shown to the public"
"As long as they have asked for forgiveness from God who are we to judge them"
"No excuse to commit crime but am sure 60% if not more were forced by the circumstances created by our gov. The system failed us"
"Prisoners should never be put on media. It undermines the justice system. Look how clean their uniforms are yet Maternity wards in Limpopo don’t have enough gowns and women wear the same bloodstained gown for 3 days!"
"I understand that this might be a rehabilitation program but they don’t deserve such happiness bandlula thina phela labantu ngokujabula"
