Lebogang Phiri has been on the fringes for Bafana Bafana for quite some time, but it seems he's ready to switch from back-up performer to a lead role.
Coach Molefi Ntseki entrusted the midfielder with his first-ever start for the national team in their crucial qualifier against Sudan on Sunday.
Phiri has been in tremendous form for his club side EA Guingamp in France and he quickly vindicated Ntseki's faith in him.
The diminutive midfielder produced a dominant display and scored the important winner with his powerful strike.
The 25-year-old was named man of the match for his all-action display.
Aside from getting onto the score sheet, Phiri also created a number of chances with his skill and creativity.
Briefly.co.za noted the significance of the match as three points were required to keep Bafana in the hunt for 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
Following Bafana's loss to Ghana away from home, Bafana would have been desperate to secure victory over the weekend.
