Positions in the ANC and ANCYL
The latter showed interests in politics at a young age. In 1990, he joined the African National Congress and became an active member of the party. In 1993, he was appointed as the party's organiser for Ndwedwe. He diligently served this position until 1994. In 1995, he grew ranks higher and became the party's zonal chairperson for Meyiwa branch.
In 1996, he was elected to serve the position of the ANCYL regional committee of North Durban. In 1997, he grew to become the chairperson. In 2000, when the African National Congress Youth League elections were conducted, the latter won the position of Provincial Secretary. Between 1996 and 2000, he was appointed as the councillor for Ilembe District Municipality.
In 2004 he won the election as the Secretary-General for the ANCLY. In 2008 during the ANC party elections, he scooped the position of Deputy Provincial Secretary for KwaZulu-Natal.
In 2015, he grew in rank to become the Provincial Chairperson.
MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs
In 2016, Willies Mchunu, the Premier of KwaZulu-Natal reshuffled his executive council. This move resulted in the latter being appointed as the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. The latter started serving the position on 7th June that year.
Premier for KwaZulu-Natal
During the elections that were conducted in May 2019, Zikalala contested for the post of Premier under the ANC. He won the elections and succeeded Willies Mchunu. On 27th May 2019, he took charge as the Premier for KwaZulu-Natal and promised to emulate Nelson Mandela in his leadership.

A couple of weeks ago, the latter came up to condemn the police for making the arrest of politicians public by inviting the media. He openly condemned the act that had occurred during the raid at Zandile Gumede's residence.
He went further to explain that the ANC was working to curb corruption and all other forms of crimes in the country, but the course that the police were taking the matter was unacceptable. President Cyril Ramaphosa backed up his opinion when he commented about the raid that had taken place in eThekwini.
