- The politician is facing allegations of bribery and corruption following his arrest in Cape Town
- The suspect will now be processed for court, following which his identity can be revealed to the public
Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi has confirmed that an ANC MP has been arrested by the Hawks on allegations of bribery and corruption.
eNCA reports that the politician was arrested in Cape Town and serves as a chair for one of Parliament's portfolio committees.
Briefly.co.za reported that the man's identity can only be revealed once he has appeared in court.
The Citizen reports that Hawks spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed the arrest, saying that the MP was being processed for court.
This is reportedly part of what seems to be a nationwide anti-corruption campaign, which has also resulted in arrests for a separate matter:
“Both cases we are dealing with are corruption-related. They are both separate cases. The one that is being dealt with in Cape Town is our main office that is dealing with that, and the other ten suspects are being dealt with by our Eastern Cape office.”
Speculation has been rife over who this mystery politician could be, with the situation trending on social media. Take a look at what citizens had to say on the controversial matter below:
