And South Africa could not have been more proud when she won an Oscar for the role.
However, the actress has revealed that not everyone was happy with her transformation.
Theron told The Hollywood Reporter that a particular movie investor was not happy with her deliberate weight gain for the part.
"As soon as I started gaining weight, I had one of the financiers call me up," the 44-year-old revealed.
"Actually, his wife saw me, and she was like, 'Did you see Charlize? Have you seen what she looks like?' And I got that call, like, 'What's going on with that?'
The investor criticised the actress for the weight gain and for her miserable-looking disposition.
Theron admits she did worry that she had taken getting into character too far.
She said, "You are taking a chance. So there is a part of you that second-guesses, right?
"And you are like, 'Sh**, well, maybe I did go too far with this.' Then you realize you have to stand that ground."
The gamble paid off swimmingly for Theron as she bagged an Academy Award for portrayng Aileen Wuomos so well.
