Khaya Mthethwa, local pastor and former Idols SA winner, got quite the debate going when he said the church needs to change.

Khaya feels that as the world changes, industries and institutions adapted to accommodate the change, but churches have been stubborn.

"Everything is changing, every institution and industry is changing. The church is in denial... May the church as an institution have the grace to adapt to the future otherwise we will find ourselves in a place of irrelevance. God give us the future - NOW!"

Briefly.co.za noticed that people quickly started discussing this idea, and not everyone was feeling it.

Check out some of the arguments for and against Khaya's comment:

@tempy_mats

"....be part of the imperfection process..people who struggle with addictions, adultery, fornication, gossip etc will never sit in church cause we will tell them what the devil already told them "you're not good enough" you'll burn in hell."

@DudeFloyed

"Nope. Disagree. I think it should remain as it is. If the church in its state survived over 2000 years then what gives this generation to temper with it. The threat of the church lies in compromise and fearing to be called out here n everywhere."

@NotiNot73765709

"Change how? Is the church as an institution not supposed to abide by God's word or is the Bible becoming irrelevant?"

@eugene_esbie

"Bra this is nothing but the truth the church still wants to hold people hostage and threatening them with condemnation"

@snmokoena

"The church should be LEADING and setting an example. Being relevant says that we're following some standard set by someone. So the answer is to be Contextually Real. That way the church brings heaven to earth. Future to the current. Please elaborate more on this "change" you are referring to... Coz it is a big word indeed. Blessings!!"

@RH_Bonani

"I want to get your point but also I’m struggling because I believe in basing things on the Word. Please do a thread and provide scriptural references just to bring clarity since the Word can never be out of tune with time, in case we get overwhelmed with feelings here. Pastor K"

@ziz318

"Why must the church change to try and fit in with the relevance with the world? We are called to come out amongst them and not to conform. The church must preach the inerrant word of God and stop trying to be relevant. Truth is truth and sin is sin!"

Khaya feels that it is the church that needs to change, not its message or even the Bible.

"There’s nothing with the word of God it’s perfect... it’s how we run the institution that’s the problem, our programs, how we Package the gospel..."
