Tornado strikes Eastern Cape villages: Disaster teams deployed

Yet another tornado has hit South Africa, this time striking Alice and Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape. The incident has left families homeless with a total of 13 villages impacted by the storm.

Over a dozen villages have suffered the wrath of a tornado in the Eastern Cape province after it struck on Friday night.

DispatchLIVE reports that eight families have lost their homes with disaster teams assessing the damage done.

Municipality spokesperson Noceba Madikizela-Vuso says the families have been taken in by relatives, with the number of people impacted expected to rise.

Teams are uncovering the true extent of the storm's devastation with an urgent meeting called to determine how immediate relief could be provided to affected residents.

Briefly.co.za reported that KwaZulu-Natal has experienced numerous tornado's over the course of the past few weeks, in addition to heavy rains and flooding.

In stark comparison provinces including Gauteng, the Northern Cape and Mpumalanga have been experiencing a severe heatwave.
