Reuters reports that Pelosi said she had instructed the House judiciary panel to draft articles of impeachment against the US president.

The speaker, according to NBC News, made the announcement in a brief televised statement when speaking directly to the American people.

“Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders and our heart full of love for America, today, I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment,” Pelosi said.

Briefly.co.za learnt the speaker stated that it was clear that President Trump had abused his power for his own political benefit at the expense of the American national security by withholding military aid and crucial meeting with Ukraine in exchange for an announcement of an investigation into his political rival.

Pelosi said leading American constitutional scholars on Wednesday, December 4, had told the judiciary committee that without a doubt that the president's actions were a profound violation of public trust.

She said the president was trying to corrupt the American elections for his own benefit, noting that President Trump had engaged in abusive power in violation of the oath of office he took to defend the American constitution.
