- The Pretoria-based Blue Bulls have turned down the chance to sign Isreal Folau
- According to the club's chief executive, they were approached by a lawyer
- Folau was sacked by Rugby Australia for his views on the LGBTQ+ community
Israel Folau and Rugby Australia finally settled a court battle after the Wallabies star was sacked for voicing his views on the LGBTQ+ community online.
The terms of the agreement they reached will remain confidential but it appears the Christian player is ready to move on.
It has since been revealed a lawyer contacted a SA-based rugby team to offer them an opportunity to sign Folau.
In an interview with Netwerk24, Blue Bulls chief executive Alfonso Meyer said a lawyer approached the club to see if they might have been interested in contacting Folau.
Briefly.co.za learned the Bulls CEO said he was not sure if it was Folau's lawyer who approached them, but added a lawyer had contacted the club to see if they were interested.
Meyer said he was excited by the opportunity at first but then decided it was not worth the risk, Cobus Claassen reported.
"He is controversial and you’ll expose yourself by contracting him. It’s a pity because he is a very special player," Meyer added.
The CEO said if it was not for the comments that landed Folau in hot water, the Bulls would have given their all to include him in the team.
SA Rugby Magazine asked social media users if they thought the Bulls should have given Folau a shot and here's what they had to say:
Social media user, @ALISONEGEER, wrote:
"Definitely! Disgusted by my Christian union turning away a man who was vilified for sharing the Scriptures."
Roland Knott, who goes by the Twitter handle @knott_roland, commented:
"Yes. He just shared his opinion on Christianity and then everyone is disgusted with him, but if if other religions do it it is fine. He would've been a perfect fit and I just hope he can get out on the rugby field again @IzzyFolau. Good Luck."
Another tweep, @JJMaritz, added:
"If there's one thing that 'n Bulls supporter loves more than a Klippies and Cola it's a win at Loftus. This guy would've helped a very young Bulls team get a couple of those next season. I think they lost out. Leeugroete!"
Marile' Scholtz, @Marile_30, said:
"Big mistake! He's a brilliant addition to any team. He could really add so much experience and be a breath of fresh air to SA! Please let him play!"
