Human remains have been found in a water reservoir during a routine inspection. A municipal officer made the discovery in Verulam, KwaZulu-Natal.
A water reservoir in Verulam has been shut down after the skeletal remains of a human was found in a compartment.
An eThekwini municipal officer had been carrying out a routine inspection when the body was found, with the municipality commenting:
"At this stage it is not clear how these human remains got into the reservoir compartment. The matter has been reported to the SAPS for a thorough investigation.The preliminary investigation has shown that the reservoir shutter doors were broken into."
The remains have been successfully recovered and the water flushed out of the system with a chemical treatment expected to take place, reports News24.
The municipality have assured residents that water quality is constantly monitored and no issues had been detected.
Briefly.co.za gathered that water tankers would be dispatched to the areas whose water supplies would be affected during the operation.
