ANC veteran Ben Turok has passed away at the age of 92, according to his family. The anti-apartheid activist apparently requested a small ceremony in light of the current economic climate.
Ben Turok, ANC veteran, anti-apartheid activist, economics professor and former Member of Parliament, has died.
The veteran's family announced the 92-year-old's passing in a statement sent out by his son, Professor Ivan Turok:
"The Turok family are very sad to announce the passing of Ben Turok, their much-loved husband, father, uncle, grandfather and great grandfather, in the early hours of Monday, 9th December, aged 92."
The statement remembered Turok as an outspoken person who had dedicated his life to fighting for freedom, equality and social justice in South Africa, Briefly.co.za gathered.
News24 reports that to mark his passing, the lifetime member of the ANC called for a more modest ceremony:
"He asked for his death to marked by a private ceremony, rather than anything official or formal, in view of the present predicament facing the country. His wisdom and counsel will be sorely missed."
