Year in review: The Ndlovu Youth Choir's inspiring rise to fame

The Ndlovu Youth Choir has to be the ones to take the top place of most inspiring entertainment of 2019. This group of people and their most amazing voices to the world by storm!

Hailing from rural Limpopo, they have become an overnight sensation being signed by one of the biggest record labels in the music industry. knows that a video went viral which announced their extraordinary entrance in the music world. This was their appearance on the famous talent show, America’s Got Talent. Next year holds exciting things for them.

The choir was established in January 2009, in the humble village of Moutse Valley. The singing group was formed by the Ndlovu Care Group’s child care community programme. The programme assisted children from disadvantaged backgrounds to enjoy the same opportunities as those children from more advantaged sectors.

The choir consists of thirty underprivileged people, ranging from the ages of fourteen to twenty-four.

The tables began to turn on 15 October 2018. Wouter Kellerman, a Grammy-winning South African musician, collaborated with the Ndlovu Youth Choir. They decided to do, Shape of You by Ed Sheeren, posting it on Kellerman’s YouTube and social pages and it just went viral.

The Limpopo-based choir took the Best Independent Music Video for their Zulu version of Shape of You. The awards show took place on November 20, at The Avalon in Hollywood.

America’s Got Talent got wind of the video after it had gone viral. The producers of the reality show approached the choir and asked if they would consider entering the 2019 competition.

Of course, these amazing people agreed and made it all the way to the finals. Unfortunately on the final night, they did not win.

Even though they did not come out winners in the competition, amazing things lay ahead. They were offered a tremendous deal with the one and only, Simon Cowell’s record label, Syco Entertainment. The label is a global joint venture together with Sony Music Entertainment Africa.

November 2019 was when they released their debut album called, Africa. The album shot straight to number one on South African iTunes. It received absolutely stunning approval.
