Real name

Zinhle's real name is Ntombezinhle, which was given to her by her dad and it means 'beautiful girls'.

Bullying

Aside from getting negative vibes from haters on social media, Zinhle has been teased about her shoulders. People say her shoulders are too broad.

"I've been teased about my broad shoulders my whole life. It hurt when I was growing up. Once someone tweeted: 'How can Zinhle's boyfriend sleep with her? It's like he's sleeping with another man'."

Mean.

Her phobia

Zinhle suffers from Globophobia - the fear of balloons. Although many would laugh this kind of thing off, the muso is truly affected by her fear.

"This one time at McDonald's, I could smell them and I had a panic attack."

She grew up poor

Zinhle didn't always have the luxurious and glamorous life she has now. She grew up in KZN without electricity and didn't have a lot of money.

"If an uncle gave me R5, my mother would make me give it back. It taught me the value of waiting."

Michael Jackson crush

The DJ has always had a thing for Michael Jackson, whom she fell in love with when she was in high school.

My first CD was one of his and I used to write down his lyrics. I even stole a Michael Jackson book from the library. His birthdays were important to me.

"I cried when he died. But I felt sorry for him, with that kind of life. He couldn't live for himself. It was too big, too much."

The song that started it all

Zinhle's big break came in 2012 when her track My Name Is put her on the map in SA and abroad. She started DJing a decade ago and has been growing ever since.

Friends didn't support her career choice

When Zinhle's friends heard that she wanted to be a DJ, they teased her about it. But she knew she wanted to make her mark in the 'boys' world'.

"One DJ said to me: 'Aren't you the sound girl? What are you doing behind the decks?' I never wanted to be one of the guys. I think I'm a better DJ because I'm a woman. We're more attentive and caring."

Zinhle's all about empowering women

The muso launched Fuse Academy, a school for girls who want to become DJs. She wants women to fight for their futures.

"My message to women is: stop being lazy. Women can fight harder for the things they want. Dreaming takes guts. It must scare you. Women are so apologetic about making money. We need to get to the point where we are like, 'We want this big money'."

She's got her own furniture line

Zinhle launched Jiyane Atelier on 4 October and her furniture line offers contemporary and chic design - a whole new era.

She posed topless once

In 2013, Zinhle promoted a range that she launched with Legit and took off her clothes for the marketing.

"It was two days of being sprayed with oil to look dripping hot."

She has her own accessories brand

Era By DJ Zinhle is her accessories brand and it is doing amazing. She is taking her business to new heights and her daughter with it.

She and Kairo, her little princess, collaborated and produced a special watch. Kairo’s watch is called the #KairoXEra – it’s a stunning little silver watch with a baby pink face that has a sparkly princess crown embedded on it.
