- Legendary South African businessman Ntate Richard Maponya has sadly passed away
- The entrepreneur has died shortly after his 99th birthday after a short illness
- Maponya will always be remembered for his commitment to uplifting Mzansi
Ntate Richard Maponya has lived a long, whirlwind life, but it sadly came to an end in the early hours of Monday morning.
Briefly.co.za reported that the business icon had recently celebrated his 99th birthday, during which President Cyril Ramaphosa called on citizens to aspire towards his greatness.
The Citizen reports that Maponya died after a short battle with illness according to a spokesperson who issued a brief statement.
The entrepreneur's family has asked for the nation to grant them privacy 'during this time of grieving'. Announcements as to the funeral arrangements are to be made in due course.
Earlier last year, the aging but active property developer voiced his concerns over the high levels of unemployment in SA. His solution was to open a school to train young citizens:
“Right now I am trying to come with an institution that must train all our youngsters so that when they graduate they get trained to use their own hands and be able to get employed or get into business in their own right."
The creation of work opportunities has been a lifelong goal for Maponya, who commented nearly two decades ago that:
“We need to create jobs for our people. That is my primary objective. I have been blessed beyond measure and am able to put food on the table; I want the same for others.”
