Social media users were blown away after hearing of the story of a determined young gardener.

The young man, named Patrick, made a decision to compete in the gruelling Attakwas extreme race.

He lacked the resources to properly compete in the 121km race, but his determination saw him through.

Armed with only a basic bicycle, tattered gloves and a pair of All Star takkies, Patrick completed the event in a time of 8:14:42.

Patrick's inspirational story was shared via Facebook and started trending recently. also learnt that Patrick will compete in the epic race this year again, but will be able to call on a brand new bike and gear.

Tony Nelson heaped praise on Patrick:
