1. Childhood

Rhulani Mokwena comes from a strong football background. His father Julius "KK" Sono is a football legend who also once played for Orlando Pirates. His grandfather, Eric Bhamuza Sono, captained Orlando Pirates in the 1960s before dying unexpectedly in a car accident. Jomo Sono, his uncle, owns the football club Jomo Cosmos.

2. Education

Mokwena has got a diploma in Sports Science. His mother didn't want him to pursue coaching but instead encouraged him to study for law.

3. Career

He was the assistant coach to Milutin Sredojevic who resigned as Orlando Pirates coach in August 2019. Rhulani was then promoted to be the acting coach of Orlando Pirates on 17 August 2019.

Before joining Orlando Pirates, Rhulani was an assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane at Mamelodi Sundowns. Rhulani also worked as Steve Komphela's assistant when he was Silvers Stars coach.
