Touching video shows entire village celebrating top matric's success

A heart-warming video has gone viral which shows a community coming together to celebrate the achievement of one of their own.

Bhekamandaba Makhonza was named the second-best pupil in KwaZulu-Natal and his hometown honoured him with a hero's welcome.

The pupil was carried on the shoulders of his community - literally, and a banner reading: “Our own hero. EsGodini location sithi phakama (rise up),” was carried around as people applauded him.

The star learner managed to obtain eight distinctions despite facing financial issues and an ill mother.

He was named the top pupil in the Umgungundlovu District and had the third-highest physics marks in the country, TimesLIVE reported.

The inspiring young man now plans on studying actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.

On Thursday, Briefly.co.za reported on another outstanding pupil, Louis Nel, who was a Grade 12 pupil at St Alban's College in 2019.

Nel, an award-winning pianist, has bagged 10 distinctions in the 2019 matric exams. The star pupil will pursue a higher education qualification at the University of Pretoria.
