Kobe Bryant, the legendary NBA player and admired sports star, has passed away in a fatal helicopter crash at about 10 am in California.

Briefly.co.za gathered from the New York Post that Kobe was travelling with at least 4 other people in his private helicopter when the accident happened.

It is believed a fire broke out and the helicopter spiralled out of control.

Disturbingly, it is also reported that Kobe's 13-year-old daughter, Gianna, was also in the helicopter at the time of the crash.

TMZ reported that she was among the five victims in the accident. This was apparently confirmed by Bryant's representative.

The conditions were foggy during the morning and the helicopter crash also led to a bush fire when it hit the ground.

This made the initial rescue efforts difficult, as reported by The Los Angeles Times.

It is believed that there were no survivors.

According to Variety, an investigation into the real cause of the crash is currently underway.

The 41-year-old star is survived by his wife and their 4 children (3 if reports about Gianna are accurate), of which the youngest was born in June 2019.

Since the sad news broke, tributes have been pouring in for a man that will go down in history as one of the greatest to ever play basketball.
