- ANC leaders were involved in an exchange of heated words recently
- This comes after Lesufi spoke out against the consumption of alcohol at ANC events
- He was corrected by fellow ANC members and social media users had mixed reactions
ANC members were involved in a small disagreement after Panyaza Lesufi called ut Jackson Mthembu and the organisation out for their consumption of alcohol. He was later corrected by another ANC member and informed that the party only uses non-alcoholic wine for toasts.
Jackson Mthembu took to his Twitter account to share pictures from the ANC birthday celebration along with the caption:
"The #ANC108th anniversary would not be complete without a birthday cake and wine."
MEC for Education in Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, responded by saying:
"We can celebrate and be happy without alcohol, my leader. This thing of having to glamorise liquor at our events is not assisting government’s campaigns against alcohol and drug abuse. Alcohol is ravaging our society and as leaders we must avoid worshipping this drug. #alcoholfreesa"
Social media users were quick to respond to his post. Twitter user tmandangu said:
"So we must celebrate with Oros."
"You’re in a position to give us a #CorruptionFreeSA but you’re busy tweeting about things you can’t control, hay suka."
"While we at it why can’t the celebrations stop & all the funds that are poured into these festivities are taken to make sure more kids go to varsity. Imagine? #AlcoholFreeSA"
Athi Geleba, the head of digital communications in the presidency, said:
"ANC doesn’t use alcohol for toasts."
Some social media users did not think her comment was honest and pulled out pictures where alcohol was consumed at previous celebration events.
