Fikile Mbalula has called out UKZN students who were burning buildings during protest action this week.
Earlier, Briefly.co.za reported a third building had been burnt down in the University of KwaZulu-Natal protests, this time at the Pietermaritzburg campus. One of the buildings was an HIV support centre.
Fikile Mbalula has taken to Twitter to share a video of the incident and he called the UKZN students "thugs".
The Minster of Transport's post read:
"Thugs are running amok! Destroying people's property."
Mbalula's post generated comments from South Africans, most of whom shared his views. However, there were those who said the protesters only followed the ANC's example.
Twitter user, @NgamlaTweets, wrote:
"This is stupidity. When everything is resolved they'll be complaining about infrastructure that they destroyed, we keep going back and forth mxm."
Another tweep, @Ndivhuw94802369, added:
"Are they thugs or peaceful protesters just burning useless properties, cause I think our government promotes and condones such behaviour."
Magasela Mzobe, who goes by the Twitter handle @MagaselaMzobe, said:
"Next thing these thugs will want to mobilise us to support their release from prison! Anyone student who burns university property deserves a jail sentence."
