Trailblazer Sophia Danenberg joined nearly 2 500 people in 2016 who actually reached the top of Mount Everest in Nepal, the world's tallest mountain.

Sophia Danenberg made history when she became the first African-American and the first black woman to climb to the summit of Mount Everest in Nepal.

According to blackhistory.com, since 1953, only about 2 500 people have actually reached the top and over 300 people have died attempting to reach the top of the mountain.

Sophia Danenberg’s recent achievement is highly remarkable because of the potential threat of death.

When she reached the peak, she suffered from bronchitis, a stuffed nose, frostbite on her face and a clogged oxygen mask but she made it to the top and made it back alive.

The trailblazer has also successfully climbed other popular mountains including Mount Tasman in New Zealand, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Mount Rainier in Washington State and Mount Kenya.

Beyond attaining great feats as a mountaineer, she works for Boeing as an expert in global chemical and environmental regulations.

Her job is to advise the corporation on EH&S policy developments and interface with global trade associations, governments, the United Nations, OECD, APEC and other intergovernmental organisations.

Prior to launching her career, Sophia was a researcher-writer for a travel guide in Thailand and a Fulbright Fellow in environmental economics at Keio University in Tokyo.

Sophia Danenberg went on her first ever hike at Harvard University when she went rock climbing with a friend.
