A massive shift in world rugby is expected to take place after 2023 with the Springboks leaving the Rugby Championship and moving into the 6 Nations, expanding it to 7.
The stakeholders have been in negotiations for a while now to move the Springboks, primarily due to the time zones of the 6 Nations being more in sync with South Africa and allowing for a more profitable partnership.
If the Springboks depart the championship, it would allow Japan and Fiji to enter the competition, which would be a nett gain in terms of progressing rugby further internationally and improving the quality of rugby internationally.
The long flights and jet lag has had a negative effect on the Springboks travelling to New Zealand and Australia.
This would not rule out tours to Australia and New Zealand by South Africa as it is important to maintain a healthy rivalry between the teams.
